Matthew Yglesias took this photo this morning and it accompanies Vox’s ongoing discussion of the events transpiring in Ferguson, Missouri.
One of the many incredibly disturbing things about everything happening there is the way the media have either chosen to say nothing about police misconduct and brutality or have made clear that it’s obviously the fault of the people who are being brutalized.
The protests in Ferguson have, by and large, been non-violent. The police response, on the other hand, has been to threaten overwhelming force and then to use it, especially on those who aren’t eager to comply with their unconstitutional commands to turn off recording devices, stop asking questions, and disperse from peacefully assembling on their own streets and yards.
The media’s insistence on this story about violent black looters and rioters gives much of the country what they expect and lets them tune out the very disturbing actions of a militarized police force and public officials who are doing nothing whatsoever to restrain them.
